Jason and I ran in the cold wet rain. You might think it's a bad thing, but it was actually an enjoyable run.

I've said it before, I'm really proud of his progress. Today was the first time he has run three consecutive miles. Plus, he logged his first sub-9:00 minute mile. Two large feats for Jason!

My 100 miles per month streak ends at midnight. At least my HARRA series streak will continue, starting with the BW this Saturday.

Striders

After joining the Houston Striders in March 2006, it didn't take me long to realized that Striders ROCK. If you've read this blog for very long, you'll see the unselfish things they have done for me and many others. Steeeve said it best when he stated, I'm proud to be associated with such a great group of people. Below is a fine example:

Last week I benefited AGAIN from being a Strider. As you may know, Consuela recently moved to Florida. She returned to Houston last week to finish the sell of her home and move some final items. Consuela had several things for sell and sent an email out via Stride4fun. One of those items was a refrigerator, which I was in need of. Initially, I just asked some questions about the appliance. It turns out this was a nearly new refrigerator and in PERFECT condition. A few days after our initial correspondence, she sent me an email stating she had others interested, but wanted to give me the first opportunity. I replied, "Please don't let me hold you from a potential buyer. The refrigerator sounds perfect, but money is tight and I need to find something a little older and cheaper." By the end of the day she replied, "I know what its like. How about this? $XXX for the refrigerator and you pay me $25 a month until its paid off." I didn't know what to say. Her counter offer was MUCH cheaper than I can find an used refrigerator ANYWHERE. Long story short, I told her I could pay the lower price in full and would be happy to have it, yet understood if she wanted to make more money on it.

Here's the root of this email. The Houston Striders are teaching so much more than running. Most important to me, I've learned the gift of friendship and giving. Consuela told me that she would rather help a friend than make money. In today's world, that's unheard of. Much like the surprise garmin, I'm lost for words. Thanks doesn't seem like enough.

I'm ready to be needed. I've been on the receiving side of a lot of kind gestures... now I want to return the kindness.

Camaraderie is what being a Houston Strider is all about. This club serves its members and the running community on many levels and surprisingly, running is merely one component. Its deeper than any outsider will ever know.

Oh yeah,
STRIDERS ROCK!

The ankle pain seemed to hold steady until mid-week. Then within two days the pain nearly disappeared. I'm glad to be done with that mess. All I need now is a liver transplant for all the ibuprofren I've taken (Grin).

My first run since the marathon. What a great feeling!

Stridelines has a monthly meet the member article. Every month they ask the featured member, "When did you know you were hooked on running" , or something like that. I gave a generic response when asked, but today was that day for me. I know in my heart that running is here to stay. This sport has been good to me and I'll forever be grateful.

While I was running I was think about what kind of post to make. One thing I wanted to do was KEEP IT POSITIVE. Unfortunately, I have to mention one thing. I'm not bitchin'', but this is a training log and I frequently reflect on it. Anyways, my right knee hurt the entire time. The same ole' pain I've had for a couple months. I assumed the time off would have taken care of it too, but I was wrong. Knee pain, no knee pain... I'm just happy to run.

And the winner is.....

The text is small, but it reads:

Stridelines wins the 2006 Jerry Little Memorial Award as the RRCA's best newsletter for small/medium-sized clubs!

The RRCA will be flying editor Miriam Terc to Chicago for the RRCA National Convention to accept the award on behalf of the HOUSTON STRIDERS.

Congratulations to Miriam and all the Striders!

My ass hurts from all the recumbent bike riding. Most people would look at my body and think its built for sitting. Truth be known, I hate it! Well, actually my back hates it. Plus, its really boring.

If everything goes as planned, tomorrows post might include a different activity. Keep your fingers crossed!

Today was the first day since the marathon that my ankle didn't "give-out". A couple episodes of discomfort when walking (weight on the ankle), otherwise a really good day.

A couple hours ago I got bummed after reviewing my 2007 running goals. There's a chance that two of my eight goals will not happen. One is the monthly mileage streak of 100 miles per month. Even if I could run right now, it would be risky to pile 31 miles in seven days.

The second goal was also a streak-style target. I've completed every HARRA Spring/Fall series race in 2006 and had hoped to continue the streak. February 3rd is the first Spring series race. Lets hope I make it to the starting line.

Is it cheating to change my mileage goal to an average 100 miles per month? That won't work, because I ran 1275 miles last year. No digressing on this blog! Maybe I should up the ante and try to break 1500 miles for the year. That's doable, right? What would you do?

I want run

Activity: Stationary Bike
Level: 3
Time: 30 minutes

Today I worked on my taxes. Since I itemize, its an all day ordeal. On the advice of a co-worker, I purchased an ankle wrap. Its seems to help at times. Still expereince occassional pain when I walk. I spent some time on the internet trying to diagnosis my ankle problem. Seems to be a simple ankle sprain. I had no idea the recovery time is so long. Here's one of many articles I found (This one's from Runners World):

A strain is an overstretched or partially torn muscle or tendon; a sprain is an overstretched or partially torn ligament. Care for minor strains or sprains early and you'll be running two to three times sooner than if you delay treatment. Use the R.I.C.E. method (rest, ice, compression, elevation), and take anti-inflammatories for 24 to 48 hours following injury. When you can stand on the injured leg and do several pain-free toe raises, that's a sign that you can start running (slowly) again, says Jayne Snyder, a physical therapist in Lincoln, Nebraska. If pain and swelling last beyond a week, see a sports-medicine specialist.

Definition: Pain and swelling from overstretched ankle ligaments.

Remedies: Treat with ice and anti-inflammatories (see "three basics"). You probably will not be able to run through a sprain, but cross-training is fine. When you can walk without pain, begin a walk/run regimen and progress to steady running. A sprained ankle can take a month or two to heal.

My ankle is a weird injury. It hurts when I walk especially when my weight is on the right ankle. I've noticed it hurts more when my stride is far out in front of me or way behind me. It simply gives out and at times I nearly fall. I can flex, extend, and roll my ankle with no pain. No pain upon palpation.

Today, I thought I'd try the stationary bike. To my surprise there wasn't a smidgen of pain. As I said, this thing is weird. Since the biking went well I decided to complete a lower body workout. Once again, no pain. This workout includes:
Seated toe raises 3x12
Squat to bench (w/15 lb DB's) 3x10
Forward leg raises 3x10
Leg extension (25 lbs) 3x10
Hamstring curl (20 lbs) 3x10
Standing heel raises (20 lb DB's) 3x12
Side leg lifts 3x10
Inner leg lifts 3x10
Toe-in (Plantar flextion) 3x12
Tow-out (Plantar flextion) 3x12

Weird, huh? Anyone know what the problem is?

My ankle stopped hurting, so I went for a slow walk. Within 1/4 mile the pain was back. Nothing serious, but it seems to "give-out" when I put weight on the right side. The weight training went well.

I've posted a couple videos below. Good stuff, but both are long. Also, check out the Houston marathon website. They have some very cool stats and finish line video footage. I love this stuff! I'd like to break into the top 50% on my next marathon. Here's what they have for me:

3189 place overall. 2158 finishers behind me. 60% finishers ahead.
Chip 3163 place

2237 gender placement. 1066 finishers behind me. 68% finishers ahead.
Chip 2217 place
291 place in age bracket. 131 finishers behind me. 69% finishers ahead.
Chip 290 place

I was ahead of 53% of female finishers.
Averaged 10:38 per mile, 6.37 per km, 5.6 mph, 9.1 kph
I was 5 seconds behind another runner in my age bracket
If I had ran 15 seconds faster I would have gained 6 gender places
I was in the middle of West University Place when the overall winner finished
Event average time: 4:30:06. This is the time I would have liked to beat.

Can you tell I'm bored?

Feeling better

Everything is feeling a lot better. I was able to freely walk around the house today. Alison is glad to stop fetching stuff for dad.

Thanks for all the encouraging words in the prior post(s). I get tired of blogging sometimes. Then I read something that pushes me to a new level. Those little comments are what I'm most thankful for. They're what keep me motivated.

I want to run Austin really bad. I know I can go sub 4:30. After reviewing the Austin reset and the doctors orders, I don't know how to make it work. Maybe they'll reach the cap. That would solve my dilemma.

Ankle pain

Unable to stand due to right ankle and right knee pain lead me to the doctors office today. Dr. Mack is awesome and knows "running related medicine". He started our conversation asking about my marathon run. As he was looking over my file he had made notes from the prior visit of my 40 mile weeks, Houston marathon, RR50, age of my shoes, etc. That impressed me.

During the assessment, I told him I had right knee pain for the first ten miles and then it disappeared for the remainder of the run. He said the knee pain most likely caused me to change my gait and land flat-footed. This created an imbalance for more than 55,000 steps. That's what he said, is that correct? The imbalance was more on the right side and an usual stress to the ankle. The doc said the swelling and bruising is nothing serious.

Doctors orders are: no running for one week. Reduce weekly mileage by 50% for three weeks. Then I can ramp back up or see him if the pain persist. Hmmmm, sounds like what Dr. Steeeeve, er Coach said to do.

MLK day

If you can't fly, then run.
If you can't run, then walk.
If you can't walk, then crawl.
But whatever you do, keep moving.

My knees and ankle hurt so bad I can't sleep. Twenty-six miles was the hardest thing I've ever done. I ran beautifully till Tanglewood. Ugh, damn that neighborhood. I had hoped to dip under 10:00/minute mile pace, but it would not be. The only thing that slowed me down was the knees and right ankle. Otherwise I was A-ok.

Random thoughts:
My shorts caused me lots of problems for the first two miles. The Gu packets were weighing them down and I was constantly pulling them up and re-tying the drawstring. I ended up pulling my shorts up as high as I could and pushing my gut out so they would stay in place. That ought to make for some impressive pictures!

Twice I have struggled through Tanglewood. Its officially my most hated neighborhood.

Disappointed I didn't spend much time with Kevin, who finished in an impressive 4:58:59! I was most impressed how fresh he was at the end. When I asked, "how do you feel", he replied "fine, nothing hurts and I had fun". Good for him! WTG Kevin.

Lots of Strider stories... too many to post. Everywhere from flat tires to vomiting to BQ's. Striders ROCKED the marathon. Speaking of Striders, I recorded the footage and the Striders are the ONLY club mentioned and there were lots of smiling yellow SMARTie singlets on TV. Glad this isn't the firehouse. Rules dictate, if the TV crew zooms in on you, then you're required to buy ice cream for everyone. If that were the case, than Steve Bezner, Carlos, Steeeve, Barry, and a few others need to make a trip to the grocery store.

Its 1 am and I'm finally getting hungry. Tired of typing. Time to re-ice the injuries.

Three miles on the greenbelts to get the legs moving. Felt sluggish. Forgot to log yesterdays weight training, so I added it to today's post.

Wednesday's local paper reported more than 400 marathon runners from Kingwood. Seems like a big number from a small area. I've lived in the area all my life and its always been common knowledge that there are lots of runners in Kingwood. This morning was no different. Being the day before the marathon, I was surprised to see so many runners out this morning. During my bike ride a group of four boys (young men) turned in front of me. Remind you they were running and I was biking. I only followed them for 3/4 mile, but I never caught/passed them. My average MPH equals a 5:20 pace. That doesn't sound right, does it? They were moving!

Glad to see tomorrows weather improving. I love the cold stuff.

Last run before the big dance. As soon as I swung my legs over the side of the bed, I realized how hard I pushed my pace last night. Was it a good run? Oh yeah! Was it a smart run? Nope, not the smartest thing I've ever done. To make amends I ran early this morning. The way I see it, that's another 12-hours of recovery.

Of course I have a biased opinion, but I think I ran well today. I joined the Striders Wednesday night group run. The light crowd proves everyone is taking their taper serious. No problem's whatsoever from the knee.

Tip

If you're taking Ultra fuel (powder), mix it in warm water.... not cold water as directed. I have a shaker cup for powder's such as ultra fuel. Even with the shaker, it would not completely dissolve. The solution liquefied instantly with warm water, then I added ice. Tasted good for a supplement drink.

Check out the above log. The splits are back! Thank you Striders!

I wanted to run 10-12 miles with the Striders this morning, but I was up late last night. The alarm went off at 5:15 to make it out there, but 4-hours of sleep wasn't enough. I still managed to wake up before 9:00 and make it to Memorial park before 11:00 am.

Today was bitter-sweet-bitter. First the bitter: My knee hurt like hell last night and occasionally during the run. I ran through the pain, which always disappeared with time. I ran my entire first mile "comfortable" and without looking at the garmin. This leads to the Sweet: Check out those splits. I was impressed the mileage felt so easy... until mile five. More Bitter: I completely died at 5 miles. The legs were holding up, but I was 100% exhausted. Out of gas. Totally spent. Nothing left. After an extended break I slowed my pace down and took advantage of occasional walk-breaks. This was a tough 9 miles.

My guess was improper fueling. I'm on a diet. Consequently, I kept the "numbers" within my allotted ranges, but I did a crappy job of fueling my body yesterday. Plus, I haven't been thirsty for the last two days, which has lead to a decrease in my water intake. If that's not enough, I biked moderately hard late last night (after 10pm). Any of these could be the reason for my exhaustion. If the above items are not the problem(s) and today's run is a reflection of my training, then Houston will not be fun! I'm sure I've got more than 9 good miles in me.

Finished the day with a two-hour walk around the Houston Zoo. That was a good experience. All the animals were out and about. Someone told Erin that overcast days are the best time to see the animals on the move. They were right.

Overall it was a good, good day.

Dr. Mack thinks I have tendonitis. He ok'd me to keep running. Oddly, he said I could run through the pain as long as it does not change my gait. Mack also ordered an MRI of my knee to rule out other possible causes. Glad I got a second opinion. Koala and Mack are on opposite ends of the spectrum. Mack thinks its a simple overuse injury. Personally I like his diagnosis much better than the first one I received.

I'm still excited about the new garmin. I've been like a kid; pushing all the buttons, setting my parameters, and so on. This may be one of the nicest things someone else has done for me.

Garmin Bliss

I may have some of the best friends in the world!

STRIDER FRIENDS!!!!

Coach Steeve dropped a couple odd hints of something good to come for me. With everything going on, I wasn't too sure where he was heading with the comments. I've been quite confused, but that's a state of mine for me. Today, the news was crystal clear and arrived at my front door.....
A BRAND NEW GARMIN!!!!

A couple weeks ago I set my garmin on the back of my truck. After parking I realized the garmin fell off (my fault). It was run over and destroyed before I had a chance to find it. See photo above of both the new and old garmin.

Coach said the Striders took up a collection and found themselves with enough money to replace my garmin. I'm soooo excited! As you probably know, I'm addicted to the numbers and I've been lost without it. WOW, this is so cool.

Let me start with THANKS! I don't know what to say or do. All the contributions were anonymous, so this is the closet thing I can do to thanking those that helped. I'm truly touched. The kindness you guys and gals have shown is much appreciated and couldn't have come at a better time. Its nice to smile. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The run went well. A little stiff for the first 1/2 mile. I wanted to run longer. The goal is to keep everything nice and easy. Tomorrow I have an appointment with Dr. Mack. I've decided to follow his advice. If he says its OK to run, I'll run. If he says no Houston marathon, than so be it.

I need to run a distance longer than 10 miles to see how things go. Maybe Saturday would be a good double-digit day. Again, it depends on the doc's advice.

Coach Steeve sent me a general "where you been" email, which resulted in me meeting the Striders tonight at Memorial Park. I joined Barb for a pleasant 4 miles to Jackson Hill. Actually Steeve said it was 4.25. It's been awhile since I've run with anyone. It was nice to carry on a conversation while running, which made the time fly. The weather held up and so did the knee. In fact, the knee was silent until the end. Even at its worst, it wasn't too bad. I got some advice from Matt on a "patella band". He said they're cheap, so its worth a try.

Added bonus to tonight's run: 1) I got to experience Bubba's. Cool place to hang out. 2) I was allowed to sit in on the Strider Ultra Relay committee meeting. You couldn't pick a better group of people. There's been a lot of work put into this and it was very obvious. As soon as we got there each committee member was given hand-outs, folders with detailed race information (color copies), and pictures via a laptop computer.

I know their decision, but you won't hear it from me. HAHAHA

I'm not too sure if she reads this blog, but thank you Barb for the wonderful run and congratulations on the new job! Barb Rocks!

Legs are very sore. Most likely from the added weight training and no recovery days. It didn't help that I was pushing the stroller. I've kept the workouts light, but I think my legs still need a break.

The knee was weird today. It hurt for awhile, then quite, then hurt, and quit.... and so on. Just when I was ready to stop, the pain would go away. The bigger problem was heavy legs. As we all know, that's an easy issue to fix.... REST.

Had to do extra output to match the input.
