Bike - MRI

Biked 15 miles today.

Anyone know of an inexpensive MRI facility? My insurance has lousy coverage and I have to met a high deductible before coverage starts, which means I have to pay for the MRI out of pocket. Don't you love the way local city government takes care of public servants? Don't get me started! Anyways, the best price I've found so far is $505 for everything. Anyone think I can beat this price?

I've put it off as long as I can. Most of March, I've had to take four ibuprofen in the morning and four more at night. Now, the knee aches 24/7 and is affecting the non-running part of my life with or without meds.

Brief update

What have I done this week? Hmmmm let's see.... First of all: Knee pain SUCKS. Excuse me, I needed to get that out of the way. OK, back to my week.

Wednesday I ran an abbreviated 30/30 workout. Nearly died after a mere six sets. Only managed to log two miles that day. Nada-thing Thursday and Friday. Saturday I ran one mile with Alison.

Quick story:
This weekend we went to Austin to run the Capital Statesman 10,000. Saturday morning, Alison ran the kids one-mile race. I stayed behind her the whole way and just let her run. From the start she established a consistent pace and maintained it the entire time WITHOUT STOPPING. I was shocked as anyone when she clocked a 10:16 mile! Can you believe a 5-year-old can run a 10:00 minute mile? I'm soooooo proud of her.

Sunday I ran the 10k. I love the Cap10k race. The hoopla and crowd support is AWESOME, but it wasn't enough to make me any faster. The hills were gruesome and reduced me to a run/walk regimen. The Austin scenery is great, but Sunday morning the humidity was god-awful. Later that night, my legs felt similar to the post marathon achenes I remember from January.
You probably want to know my time, huh. Well, 1:09:xx. Slowest 10k time I've ever run. With all the frustration of the knee pain, I finally located a road bike I could afford. Cycling doesn't hurt whatsoever. Its boring as hell, but it at least it is pain-free.

Back to my week. My buddy Wyatt and I went bike riding today. We went from my house to a park which has gravel trails, so I had to utilize my mountain bike. It was odd to leave my brand new bike at home! We logged 16.5 miles. I don't know the time. We stopped for a lot of red lights and even rode to a restaurant for lunch.

I can't say which way my training is heading. The desire is there, but the ability is the missing key component. Coach Steeeve went way out of his way (which is nothing new for him) to build me a custom schedule. I'm trying to follow it, but the bum knee is stopping me from following it 100%.

Bitter-sweet news today.

As I often do, I was looking over my training log. With the extended abilities of the software, I can use the log to track my weight. This is where the bitter news comes in. I'm one-pound heavier right now, than I was this time last year. Damn.

Moving on.

Erin has an administrative job in the hospital and with that comes her clinical friends and co-workers. Today they were looking for "test-subjects" for ultra-sound students. Since they know she is pregnant, she got the opportunity to have extended time in ultra-sound. We've had our regular ultra-sound appointments, but the baby always has his legs crossed or he's in an awkward position. Not today! He was spread eagle for all the world to see. Without a doubt, its a BOY. I'm so freakin' excited I can barely stand it.

Danny Boy

Happy Saint Patricks Day. Time to embrace the Irish half of my heritage. I'm off to down a few pints!

I must use caution when drinking tonight or supress the other half of my heritage (Hispanic), as to avoid stealing your hub cabs.

Cycle-workout, Run-workout

Yesterday I cycled 5.5 miles through the Kingwood greenbelts. The speed was slow because I was towing Alison in her bike trailer. Average speed was 8.8 mph. Also did a mid-body workout.

Today, I ran 2.1 miles at work. Another hard run for me. I accidentally stopped my watch therefore no exact time. I assume ~21 minutes. Afterward I did a lower body workout. I think running at work is hard due to some old running shoes I keep in my locker for convenience and those darn loops.

5K

I never know my running ability from day-to-day. Yesterday's 11:00 minute pace for two miles beat the shit out of me, yet today I ran a 5k in 28:37. Go figure?!?!?!

The race was a Houston Strider novelty run with a Shepard-twist. We met at Bear Creek Park and all 29 runners were handicapped based on their current 5k ability. Coach Steeve translated the predicted times into staggered starts.
Due to my lack of running and general fitness level I opted for an 11:00 mile pace, which was later labeled "the night's biggest lie". I was second to start with a three-minute handicap. I pushed Alison in her stroller. Surprisingly the knees behaved themselves, merely minor discomfort during this run. The course measured ~3.2 miles, but I shut down at the 5k mark. From there I let Alison out of the stroller and followed her lead to the finish line.
The run was concluded with a club sponsored meal at The Great Charcoal Chicken. Man, I love that place. Alison and I both had a good time.

sm post

Yesterday at work I ran 2.1 miles. About 22 minutes, +/- 5 minutes. Unusually hard effort. Also worked out my mid-body; chest, abs, back, traps.

BCC

Its dead. Done. All over with....
My HARRA series streak ended today at fourteen or fifteen, I've lost count. My frustration made it easy to flake on this mornings run. I lost respect for the Ironfoot competition for a number of reasons. As I've said before, HARRA is missing a wonderful opportunity to showcase those die-hard runners who lack the talent or skill to compete otherwise, yet offer their heart and soul to the running community. Enough said.

Went to the BCC 10k as a spectator. Never done that before. It's an odd feeling, but I had a lot of fun. Also had two great conversations. One with Coach Steeeeve and the other with SteveS. Both these men are wise beyond their years. The environment and talks proved good for my soul. Thanks guys.

Its time to get over this pity party and RUN!

Its always something

My knees have been bothering me. Fortunately, the pain eased up this week. Biked an aggressive 60 minutes Sunday plus a lower body workout. Everything went better than expected. Decided to start running Tuesday. Ran two miles at work. I've recently changed shifts. With the new running partners, the run got a little manly. Two miles in 17:20. I dropped all but one, who left me in his dust. Devoured a few enchiladas, thirty minutes before the run. The food made for lots of nausea and the pace made for a LOT of hard breathing. I'm officially out of shape. Well, actually I have a shape.... my shape is big and round.

After the run and workout I somewhat hurt my back on an EMS call. We were trying to get a large man out of his mobile home. Trailers always cause us the most grief. Now my back has been aching ever since. Tried running yesterday. Made it half a mile, turned around, and walked home. More mental fatigue than anything.

This morning I'm sore all over. I mean REALLY sore. Plus, it appears I've traded the bum knee for a bum back. When the back heals it will likely be something else. I've thought about starting over with my running. All I need to do is find a good starter program and try to ramp up again. Thirty mile weeks are out of the question at my current fitness level.

I'm also fighting the urge to kill this blog. I stopped reading other blogs a couple months ago. Now my blog is boring and too time consuming. We'll see what happens. I'm confident that my days of daily post are behind me. Glad I don't have the whopping 4.6 readers that Steve Bezner has.
